Return to Freedom:
People desire freedom. It is a priceless commodity. America is founded on it and fights for it. Scientology promises the bridge to total freedom. That is the contract. Whether you buy five hours or one thousand hours or auditing that is what you sign up for. A lot of time and effort, sacrifice, and money are spent in the promise that if one steadfastly follows the bridge you will become free. Unfortunately, the current church does not create an environment where freedom can occur.
Freedom is defined as the condition of being free; the absence of coercion or constraint in choice or action, exempt from slavery or restraint from the power of another, independence; also, the quality of being, open, or outspoken. Political freedom is the absence of interference with the sovereignty or leader of an individual by the use of coercion or aggression. To sum it up, freedom is a state of being free from oppression.
In a destructive group enforced external restraints and oppression are imposed particularly regarding the power to act, speak and think. A constructive group’s leader does not use coercion or aggression. He exhibits the proper balance of power and limits. His group is held together by an altruistic cause or honest economic purpose where respectful co-creation exists to forward and enhance group and individual survival. Individuals do not solely work out of sense of obligation, nor do they work under the threat of another’s force and duress. There is consent and cooperation. The group is civil and humane. The leadership provides security, protection, and guarantees certain individual rights. Historically, when a group or government doesn’t provide that it dissolves or is overthrown.
It’s natural to think that as a child matures his or her power of reason improves. You hope that would be the same for a group’s evolution. But if the leader is immature, greedy, and cruel reason does not exist. Reason declares individuals should refrain from harming each other and preserve their dignity and liberty. A destructive leader does not have the gift of reason. His internal battle and rage forbids it. Anyone or anything in his path is at risk. To gain an unquestioned rule the leader creates an environment akin to a “state of war.” This describes the current state of affairs in the Church of Scientology and other destructive groups. Peace and harmony do not exist within the group or with society. In contrast, a leader that creates harmony internally and externally often dovetails the group into a success.
Freedom and equality are buzzwords in our republican culture, yet equality is not inherent. We are all born with different shortcomings and gifts. However, equality exists in terms of importance. No one job in an organization is more important than the other. They might have different value. A minimum wage job can be as important as any other. A smart exec knows that and treats each employee with due respect. Those seeking absolute power don’t understand that and degrade and waste staff members.
When one is continually beaten down reasoning and mental clarity is distorted and nullified. When a member is abused by a destructive leader the tendency is to justify and rationalize the cruelty because it is so difficult to believe that someone they respect and admire so much could intentionally hurt them. Truth forces the member to face the sudden overwhelming awareness that they are being deceived, used, and victimized. To not feel deceived and have doubts the member invalidates his or her own ethics, morals and perceptions. Guilt for being critical follows and is replaced with a false positive image of the leader and the group. Years of rationalization and mental conflict can lead to severe mental and spiritual problems. This can be remedied by unwinding reverse Scientology with a skilled auditor.
Breaking the law and hitting back is not the answer as tempting as it might be. The one freedom that everyone has is the freedom to act rationally. In Scientology terms, you have the power to postulate and perceive. You have the freedom to think as you wish and have your own viewpoint. You have the freedom to know. You have the right to know the truth. You do not have to comply with unlawful and inhumane demands of a cruel leader or group. You don’t have to live in a state of insecurity by being a part of a group in a manufactured state of war.
A sane group protects individual liberties and freedoms. Any group that does not provide it is not worthy of support. That group needs to compensate the individuals who were wrongfully injured and hurt. When Scientology breaks the contract to deliver freedom then the individual should ask for compensation. Perhaps refunds and repayments are not enough, but it is a step in the right direction. If the executive in power prevents freedom by arbitrarily preventing lawful and humane activities which oppresses the members, it is only natural that the group has the right to oppose the leader and work to remove him. Members have the right to defend themselves against any leader or group who uses violence to try to take away their freedom. Returning to freedom would entail a return to reason and actions that coincide. Simply stated, it is freedom of thought and action.
